INGLEWOOD CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPOINTS
A NEW DISTRICT ONE CITY COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE
Inglewood Mayor and City Council unanimously appointed Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Alena Cindy Giardina to temporarily fill the District One City Council office vacancy at its meeting on Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Giardina took office immediately and will continue to serve until the successful candidate in the District One run-off election of June 12, 2007 is sworn into office.

Alena Cindy Giardina is a 33-year resident of the City of Inglewood. She is a graduate of California State University Los Angeles, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Ms. Giardina has worked for the Los Angeles County Probation Department for 28 years and maintains a genuine commitment to young people. She worked with street gangs in Compton for 21 years and notes that she is an advocate for children. In addition to serving as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner for a number of years, Ms. Giardina is also President of the 80th Street Block Club.

Asked what she would like to accomplish during her short tenure, she said that she would like to see Inglewood as a city united. She also notes that Inglewood should be a beacon and a model for other cities. Giardina says that one of her first projects will be to address the issues around Circle Park in District One.

As required by the City Charter, the City Council adopted a resolution making findings that filling the District One seat was essential to conduct city business. The initiative by District Four Councilman, Ralph Franklin, noted that the City had not consistently held regularly scheduled Council meetings due to an anticipated lack of a quorum since the District One seat was vacated December 4, 2006, when former Councilman Curren D. Price, Jr. was sworn into his office as Assemblyperson for the 51st District. The Council report also noted that the City may need to take action on items that require a super majority vote, i.e. 4/5th’s, thus the office needed to be filled to conduct business of this nature.

Councilwoman Giardina is available to District One residents and may be contacted in the Council Office at (310) 412-5320.
